ASUS Z8PE-D12 Server Motherboard

ASUS has long been at the forefront of motherboard design with innovative features, excellent board design, and excellent overclockability of their boards.

One of the best server and workstation motherboard on the market. ASUS has manufactured many server and
workstation motherboards over the years, including the ASUS Z8NA-D6C.

Server boards are important for those wanting the fastest CPU configuration with large
amounts of memory, high speed networking and high performance 3D graphics tailored for 3D
applications like 3DSMax or AutoCAD which are not really designed for gaming as much as
drawing lines and point. The Server class CPU from Intel is known as the Xeon. The latest
Xeon CPUs are the six core Xeon 56xx series. These CPUs use the Socket 1366 interface and
range in clock speed from 1.86-3.33GHz.

This is a dual-CPU board that supports the latest Xeon CPUs including the 56xx series that was recently released from
Intel. It should be an interesting review and comparison to the Z8NA-D6C.

The ASUS Z8PE-D12 motherboard is based upon Intel?s 5520 IOH (Input Output Hub). The 5520
IOH supports dual Intel Xeon CPUs with up to 6 cores and is the functional equivalent of
the X58 chipset on the single CPU space. The 5520 supports all Intel Xeon LGA-1366 5
Series CPUs including the latest 5690 and below CPUs.

Each Xeon CPU has a separate memory controller built into the CPU. The board itself has
12 DIMM slots that can handle up to 8GB DDR3 DIMMs or 96GB total. Each CPU has a Triple
Channel memory controller, meaning that it must be installed in groups of three for each
CPU to get the full benefit of triple channel memory on it.

Flex-E stands for Flexible-Express. The board has the option of using a single PCI
Express x16 slot or splitting the lanes into two x8 links for I/O expansion allowing the
customers to use PCI-E link with more flexibility. There is also a MIO audio card that
can be added to the board to offer great sound to complement the onboard integrated
graphics.

One of the issues with server motherboards is storage. The ASUS Z8PE-D12 motherboard
supports ASUS?s PIKE (Proprietary I/O Expansion Kit Expansion) system. This is a SAS
controller that plugs into a PIKE slot on the board offering up to 8 SAS ports in
addition to the six SATA 2 ports on the D8PE-D12 board. Supported PIKE cards include the
1064E, the 1068E, the 1078 and the 6480 PIKE cards.

The ASUS ASMB3-IKVM Upgrade Kit is an interesting concept in that it allows the
administrator to remote manages the servers from anywhere and anytime. Through the
integration of ASMB3 IKVM MIS is capable of remote real-time access to servers with full
control by keyboard, video monitor and mouse (KVM) of a single local computer from
anywhere at any time. KVM over LAN allows administrators to share the data saved to a
local drive (floppy, CD/DVD-ROM, flash device HDD) to target servers.
